Catalina American Baptist Church

Catalina American Baptist Church outgrew its sanctuary and more space was needed, especially in the church’s Sunday School programs. ABA Architects was retained to create a master plan for the church expansion. One of the design challenges was to not build above a 25-foot-high code limitation, and that was accomplished by placing education rooms with natural light on a lower level. The church’s existing sanctuary, a unique structure and a Tucson landmark, was incorporated into the master plan as a chapel while adding a multi-purpose facility that includes an indoor basketball court, kitchen, stage, and education spaces for Sunday School and meetings. A 2,200-square-foot sunken courtyard provides access to the classrooms at the lower level, and provides a sheltered amphitheater for outdoor presentations and classes. The new addition also contains a memorial garden.
